Lesson 7

Time and appointments

Tijd en afspraken

This is how to tell the time. For an exact hour, say: Het is zeven uur. — It is seven o'clock. Over means past the hour: Het is tien over zeven. — It is ten past seven. Voor means to the next hour: Het is tien voor acht. — It is ten to eight.

Half refers to the next hour: half acht means 7:30, or half past seven in English. Kwart means a quarter of an hour: kwart over zeven (7:15), kwart voor acht (7:45). Een kwartier means fifteen minutes.

Om gives the time when something happens: Ik werk om acht uur. — I work at eight o'clock. Tot gives the finishing time: Ik werk tot vijf uur. — I work until five o'clock.
