Dutch A1.2

Lesson 12 · Grammar

Spelling the verb stem

Spelling van de stam

The rule from A1.1 lessons 8 and 13 still applies: remove -en to find the stem, then make any necessary spelling changes. Use the stem with ik; stem + t with jij / u / hij / zij (she); and the infinitive with wij / jullie / zij (they). Some stems are spelt differently from the form you see in the infinitive. This lesson covers three cases. A short vowel and a double consonant. In stoppen, bellen, zitten, pakken and wassen, the vowel is short, so the infinitive has a double consonant: pp, ll, tt, kk or ss. The stem has only one: stoppen → stop, bellen → bel, spellen → spel, zitten → zit, liggen → lig, pakken → pak, wassen → was. The vowel sound stays short: ik stop, jij stopt, wij stoppen.

Stems ending in -t or -d. If the stem already ends in t, do not add another t: zitten → ik zit, jij zit, hij zit; sluiten → jij sluit; wachten → jij wacht. If the stem ends in d, add t with jij / u / hij / zij (she), giving -dt: vinden → ik vind, jij vindt, hij vindt; antwoorden → jij antwoordt. The final -d and -dt sound the same; the difference is in the spelling.

v changes to f, and z changes to s. Do not write v or z at the end of these stems: geven → geef (ik geef, jij geeft, wij geven), blijven → blijf, schrijven → schrijf, lezen → lees (ik lees, jij leest, wij lezen), reizen → reis. Geef and lees also have a doubled vowel, as in A1.1 lesson 13. In the plural, v and z return: wij geven, wij lezen.
