Dutch A1.2

Lesson 17 · Grammar

Where is it? In, op and bij

Waar is het? In, op en bij

You already know the words in, op and bij. Now practise using them to describe a location. In means inside a space or thing: in de kamer (in the room), in de tas (in the bag). Op often means on a surface: op de tafel (on the table), op de stoel (on the chair). Bij can mean near or at a place, or at someone's home: bij de deur (by the door), bij mijn oma (at my grandmother's).

Learn each combination as a whole. English and Dutch do not always use matching prepositions: “on the bus” is in de bus, “at school” is op school, and “at the bus stop” is bij de halte. Op school (at school) and op het werk (at work) are fixed combinations.

The noun does not change after in, op or bij: de kamer → in de kamer. The verbs zijn (be), zitten (sit), staan (stand) and liggen (lie) help describe where someone or something is. Dutch often uses staan or liggen where English simply uses “be”: Het boek ligt op de tafel (The book is on the table). De fiets staat bij de deur (The bike is by the door).

Ask about a location with waar (where): Waar is mijn boek? — Het ligt op de tafel. (Where is my book? — It is on the table.) Waar zijn mijn ouders? — Zij zijn bij de ingang. (Where are my parents? — They are at the entrance.) Waar ben je? — Ik ben in de bibliotheek. (Where are you? — I am in the library.)
