Lesson 11 · Grammar

Plurals in -s: words ending in -el and -er

Meervoud op -s: woorden op -el en -er

Many words ending in an unstressed -el or -er syllable take -s in the plural. Learn the forms shown here: tafel → tafels (table → tables), kamer → kamers (room → rooms). Winkel → winkels (shop → shops) also belongs to the group we practise. Use de in the plural. Although English often adds -s too, this is not a rule for all Dutch nouns.
