Lesson 13 · Grammar

Plurals in -en: long vowels

Meervoud op -en: lange klinker

The plural ending is -en. A long vowel written with two vowel letters in the singular is written with one vowel letter in an open syllable: raam → ramen (window → windows). An open syllable ends in a vowel: ra-men. The vowel sound stays long. We only practise the listed words, without any other spelling changes.
