Lesson 17 · Grammar
Time first: Vandaag werk ik
Tijd vooraan: Vandaag werk ik
A statement can begin with a time expression. Then the order is: time, conjugated verb, subject: Ik werk vandaag. → Vandaag werk ik. — I work today. → Today I work. Unlike English, Dutch puts the verb before the subject when a time expression comes first. A group of words can also fill the first position: op dinsdag (on Tuesdays) or om elf uur (at eleven o’clock). This is a statement, not a question.
